OHIP-Covered Prescriptions — No Doctor's Visit Needed

As of January 1, 2023, registered pharmacists in Ontario are authorized to assess and prescribe medications for 19 common health conditions — without a referral or doctor's visit. This service is fully covered by OHIP, meaning there is no cost to eligible patients.

You don't need to take time off work, sit in a waiting room, or book an appointment weeks in advance. Simply complete the form, and if appropriate, your prescription will be prepared and ready — often the same day.

This program is available to Ontario residents with a valid OHIP card. It is intended for mild, uncomplicated conditions. It is not for emergencies — call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room for serious symptoms.

A minor ailment is a short-term, uncomplicated health condition that can be safely managed with over-the-counter or prescription medication. These are everyday conditions that previously required a doctor's appointment — now your pharmacist can handle them directly.

The conditions covered under Ontario's Minor Ailment Prescribing program were chosen because they are common, well-understood, and carry low risk when treated appropriately by a trained pharmacist.
