Start Planning Early: Your Timeline
The most important rule of travel health is to start early. We strongly recommend booking a travel consultation 4 to 6 weeks before your departure date. Some vaccines require multiple doses spread over several weeks to be fully effective, and others take up to two weeks after the shot to provide immunity.
If you're leaving sooner, don't panic! Some protection is always better than no protection. Many vaccines can still be administered on an accelerated schedule. However, giving yourself a 6-week runway is the safest approach.
What to Bring to Your Travel Consultation
To give you the most accurate and personalized advice, our clinical pharmacists need to understand the full scope of your trip and your health history. Please come prepared with:
- Your exact itinerary: Including all countries, regions, and whether you'll be in urban centers, rural areas, or high altitudes.
- Length of your stay: Risk profiles change for trips longer than 3-4 weeks.
- Style of travel: Are you backpacking, staying in 5-star resorts, working in medical facilities, or visiting friends and relatives?
- Your past vaccination records: Any previous travel vaccines, childhood immunizations, or COVID-19 boosters.
- Current medical conditions and medications: Including allergies, pregnancy status, and any immune-compromising conditions.
Essential Travel Vaccines by Destination
Depending on where you are traveling, different vaccines are recommended or explicitly required for entry.
1. Routine Immunizations (Global)
Before worrying about exotic diseases, ensure your routine Canadian vaccines are up to date. This includes:
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
- Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (Tdap)
- Polio
- Seasonal Flu & COVID-19
2. Hepatitis A & B
Hepatitis A is transmitted through contaminated food and water and is one of the most common vaccine-preventable diseases in travelers. Hepatitis B is transmitted through blood and bodily fluids (medical procedures, tattoos, sexual contact). The combined Twinrix vaccine is highly recommended for most travel outside North America and Western Europe.
3. Typhoid Fever
Contracted through contaminated food or water, Typhoid is a serious risk in South Asia, Africa, and parts of Central/South America. We offer both oral and injectable typhoid vaccines.
4. Yellow Fever (Required for Entry)
Yellow fever is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes in tropical regions of Africa and South America. Importantly, many countries require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination (the International Certificate of Vaccination) to allow you to enter the country.
Ultima Pharmacy is an officially designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre in North York. We can administer the vaccine and provide you with the necessary international documentation.
5. Traveler's Diarrhea and Cholera (Dukoral)
Traveler's diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travelers. Dukoral is an oral vaccine that helps prevent cholera and provides cross-protection against E. coli, a major cause of traveler's diarrhea. We highly recommend this for trips to the Caribbean, Mexico, and South Asia.
Don't Forget About Malaria and Sun Protection
Vaccines aren't the only concern. Many travel illnesses, like Malaria, Dengue, and Zika, are mosquito-borne and do not have commercial vaccines available. At Ultima Pharmacy, we can:
- Prescribe antimalarial pills: Tailored to the specific chloroquine-resistance patterns of your destination.
- Provide mosquito nets and DEET repellents: Essential for preventing Zika and Dengue.
- Supply medical-grade sunscreens: Formulated for extreme UV indexes.
- Build a custom travel first-aid kit: Including antibiotics for severe diarrhea, motion sickness medication, oral rehydration salts, and antihistamines.
