What Are Minor Ailments?

As of January 1, 2023, pharmacists in Ontario are authorized to prescribe medications for 19 specific minor ailments. This significant change in healthcare delivery means you no longer need to wait for a doctor's appointment for common, straightforward health issues that can be safely managed by a medication expert.

A "minor ailment" is defined as a health condition that is easily identifiable, requires minimal or no laboratory testing to diagnose, and can be reliably treated with short-term prescription or over-the-counter medications. By allowing pharmacists to prescribe for these conditions, the healthcare system aims to reduce wait times at walk-in clinics and emergency rooms, while providing patients with faster access to the relief they need.

The Complete List of 19 Conditions We Can Treat

Our specially trained prescribing pharmacists at Ultima Pharmacy can now assess and prescribe for the following 19 conditions. If you are experiencing symptoms related to any of these, you can walk directly into our pharmacy for a consultation:

Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat

  • Pink eye (Allergic Conjunctivitis): Itchy, red, watery eyes caused by allergens like pollen or pet dander.
  • Oral Thrush (Candidal Stomatitis): A fungal infection inside the mouth, common in babies, denture wearers, or after antibiotic use.
  • Cold Sores (Herpes Simplex): Painful fluid-filled blisters on or around the lips.

Skin Conditions

  • Eczema (Mild to Moderate Atopic Dermatitis): Red, itchy, inflamed patches of skin.
  • Hives, Bug Bites and Stings: Mild allergic skin reactions causing raised, itchy welts.
  • Impetigo: A highly contagious bacterial skin infection causing red sores that rupture and ooze.
  • Acne (Mild): Common skin condition causing pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.
  • Tick Bites (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis to Prevent Lyme Disease): If you've been bitten by a tick, we can prescribe a preventative antibiotic to reduce the risk of Lyme disease.
  • Diaper Rash: Severe diaper dermatitis that hasn't responded to standard barrier creams.

Gastrointestinal and Digestive

  • Acid Reflux (GERD): Heartburn, regurgitation, and indigestion.
  • Hemorrhoids: Swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum and anus that cause discomfort and bleeding.
  • Pinworms and Threadworms: Common intestinal parasite infections causing intense anal itching.

Women's Health

  • Urinary Tract Infections (Uncomplicated UTIs): Painful, frequent urination in individuals assigned female at birth.
  • Menstrual Cramps (Dysmenorrhea): Painful periods requiring prescription-strength anti-inflammatories.
  • Yeast Infections (Vaginal Candidiasis): Itching, irritation, and discharge.

Pain and Musculoskeletal

  • Sprains and Strains: Minor musculoskeletal pain from injuries.

Other Conditions

  • Allergic Rhinitis: Seasonal allergies causing sneezing, runny nose, and congestion.
  • Traveler's Diarrhea: Preventative antibiotics and treatments for diarrhea contracted while traveling.
  • Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy: Morning sickness relief.

How the Prescribing Process Works

The minor ailments prescribing process at Ultima Pharmacy is designed to be seamless, professional, and entirely covered by your Ontario health card (OHIP). Here is what you can expect when you visit us:

  1. Book an Assessment or Walk In: You can simply walk into our pharmacy at 311 Sheppard Ave E, or call ahead to ensure minimal wait time. We also offer secure virtual assessments through our Pharmassess portal.
  2. Private Consultation: You will meet privately with one of our clinical pharmacists. They will review your symptoms, ask about your medical history, and review your current medications to ensure any new prescription is safe and won't cause drug interactions.
  3. Assessment and Diagnosis: The pharmacist will determine if your condition meets the criteria for a minor ailment. Note: If your symptoms point to a more serious condition, or if you require physical examinations or lab tests, the pharmacist will refer you to our Walk-in Clinic or the nearest emergency department.
  4. Treatment Plan: If appropriate, we'll prescribe the necessary medication right on the spot. We will explain how to take it, what side effects to watch for, and when you should expect to feel better.
  5. Follow-Up: We will schedule a follow-up call or visit to ensure the medication is working and your symptoms are resolving. We will also notify your primary care physician (family doctor) about the prescription to keep your medical records up to date.

Who is Eligible?

To be eligible for a minor ailment assessment by an Ontario pharmacist, you must:

  • Have a valid Ontario health card (OHIP card). The assessment fee is fully covered by the government.
  • Be experiencing symptoms of one of the 19 approved conditions.
  • Provide consent for the pharmacist to notify your family doctor (if you have one) about the assessment and any prescribed treatments.

Please note: While the assessment itself is free with OHIP, the cost of the prescribed medication will depend on your personal health insurance plan (e.g., ODB, private insurance, or out-of-pocket).

Why Choose Your Pharmacist for Minor Ailments?

Choosing your pharmacist as your first point of care for minor ailments offers several distinct advantages:

  • Speed and Convenience: You can often be seen the same day, saving you hours of waiting at a walk-in clinic or days waiting for a doctor's appointment.
  • Medication Expertise: Pharmacists are the medication experts. Because we already have your complete medication history on file, we are in the best position to ensure any new prescription won't interact negatively with your current medications or medical conditions.
  • Continuity of Care: Because Ultima Pharmacy also features an on-site Walk-In Clinic, if your condition falls outside the scope of a minor ailment, we can seamlessly transition your care to our clinic physicians without you having to travel elsewhere.
  • Relieving the Healthcare System: By utilizing pharmacist prescribing, you are helping to free up doctors' offices and emergency rooms for patients with more complex or severe medical needs.

When to See a Doctor Instead

While pharmacists can handle many common issues, certain "red flag" symptoms require a doctor's attention. You should skip the pharmacy and see a doctor (or visit the ER) if you experience:

  • Severe, unrelenting pain
  • High fever
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Symptoms that are rapidly worsening
  • Conditions affecting infants or very young children (depending on the condition)
  • Conditions requiring physical exams (like listening to the lungs or checking blood pressure) or laboratory tests (like bloodwork or urine cultures).
