What Causes Diaper Rash?
Diaper rash, medically termed diaper dermatitis, is an extremely common form of inflamed skin (dermatitis) that appears as a patchwork of bright red skin on a baby's bottom. Almost every baby will experience diaper rash at some point before they are fully toilet trained. It is typically caused by a combination of factors related to the diaper environment itself:
- Irritation from Urine and Stool: Prolonged contact with moisture, urine, and the enzymes in feces is the primary cause. Diarrhea is particularly harsh on an infant's delicate skin.
- Friction and Chafing: Tight-fitting diapers or clothing that rub repeatedly against the skin can cause redness and irritation.
- New Products: A change in baby wipes, a new brand of disposable diapers, or a different laundry detergent for cloth diapers can trigger an allergic or irritant reaction.
- Introduction of New Foods: As babies start eating solid foods, the content and frequency of their stool changes, which can increase the likelihood of diaper rash.
Identifying a Yeast Infection (Candida)
While most diaper rashes are simple irritant contact dermatitis, a dark, warm, moist diaper is also the perfect breeding ground for a fungal (yeast) infection caused by Candida albicans. It is crucial to distinguish between a simple rash and a yeast infection, as standard diaper creams will not cure a fungal infection.
A yeast diaper rash typically appears bright red, often with smaller red bumps or "satellite lesions" spreading out from the main rash. It frequently settles deep into the skin folds and creases (unlike an irritant rash, which usually affects the convex surfaces that touch the diaper directly). A yeast rash will not improve with standard barrier creams and may even worsen.
Prevention and Home Care
The most effective treatment for standard diaper rash is keeping the baby's skin as clean and dry as possible. This involves:
- Frequent Changes: Change diapers promptly as soon as they are wet or soiled.
- Gentle Cleaning: Use a soft washcloth and water, or alcohol-free, unscented wipes. Avoid harsh scrubbing.
- Air Time: Allow your baby to go without a diaper for short periods to let the skin air dry completely.
- Barrier Creams: Apply a thick layer of a zinc oxide or petroleum jelly-based diaper cream at every change to create a physical barrier between the skin and moisture.
